Treasure Hunt List

Bible Reading: Acts 17:10-12; Hebrews 10:24-25

The kids in Jon’s youth group were having a great time on their nighttime treasure hunt. They roamed the dark woods, studying the clues and figuring out what they had to find. Jon shone his flashlight on the list Mr. Scott had given them and pointed to one of the clues. “From me will come the mighty oak,” he read. “That must be an acorn.”

Peyton shone his light all around. “Look! There’s an oak tree over there.” The team quickly headed for the oak tree and soon found an acorn.

“What else do we need?” asked Stephanie. “Read the next clue.”

Jon looked down at the paper to read, but a gust of wind blew the list out of his hand and into the darkness.

“Oh no!” Stephanie said. “We’ve got to get that paper back!”

Shining their flashlights all around, the kids plunged off the path in the direction the paper had gone. “Here it is!” Peyton called a minute later. They continued reading the clues and eventually found every item on the list.

When everyone made it back to the meeting point, the group had devotions. “In what ways does the treasure hunt list compare to the Bible?” Mr. Scott asked.

Jon quickly raised his hand. “Our list blew away, but we needed it to know what treasure we had to find—if you can call things like acorns and maple leaves treasure,” he said with a grin. “And we need the Bible because it tells us about the greatest treasure of all—Jesus.”

“Very good,” said Mr. Scott. “That’s one reason why it’s good to read verses from the Bible every day. Who has another idea?”

“It took all of us to figure out the clues and find those things on the treasure hunt list,” Kim said. “Sometimes it helps to study the Bible with other people too, doesn’t it? That’s why it’s good to go to church.”

“Right!” said Mr. Scott. “Studying the Bible together—talking about it and discussing what the verses mean—often helps us understand what God is saying to us.” He opened his Bible. “Let’s read and discuss a few verses right now.” – Charles VanderMeer

How About You?

Do you study the Bible with other Christians? Early believers often met together to learn about Jesus, and it’s good for you to do that too. Some verses are hard to understand, and talking about them with parents, Sunday school teachers, pastors, and other mature Christians can be very helpful. Take advantage of opportunities to read and discuss God’s Word with other Christians.
