Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

“I know Samantha’s older than me, but she and her friends could have asked me to go with them on their camping trip,” Lena muttered as she kicked a shoe across her bedroom floor. She went to find her mother. “I’m too young to do anything that’s fun!” she complained. “I’m too young to go camping. I’m too young to ride my bike in the street. I’m never old enough to do the things Samantha does. It’s not fair!”

“You’ll get to do those things soon enough, Lena,” Mom told her. “Don’t try to rush through life. That will only make you unhappy.”

“But, Mom—” Lena began. She stopped when Mom held up a large piece of fabric.

“I love to sew,” Mom said, pointing to the material. “When you were a baby, I often pinned quilt pattern squares on this material, got out the scissors, and tried to cut pieces. I got interrupted so often that I never got much done. The twins were toddlers then, and your sister was five. It always seemed like you needed feeding or the boys needed a drink or your sister needed attention. It was the wrong season of my life to sew, so I put the patterns away.”

“You sew now though,” Lena said.

“Yes. I’m working on a quilt. It’s the right time for that now.”

“Because us kids don’t need so much attention anymore?”

Mom nodded. “God gives us seasons of life, kind of like He gives seasons of the year. Crops won’t grow if they’re planted in the wrong season, and we won’t grow the way we’re supposed to if we try to live in the wrong season. Wait patiently for the right season to do the things Samantha is doing. Enjoy the season of life God has you in now, and trust Him to use it to help you grow.”

Lena sighed. “Okay, but it must be the right time for me to do something.”

“It is,” said Mom. “You know what I think you’re just the right age to do?”

“What?” asked Lena.

“I think you’re just the right age to help me make cookies,” Mom said, setting the quilt materials aside.

Lena grinned, and they headed for the kitchen. Karen E. Cogan
