Bible Reading: Philippians 4:4-8

As Melody nibbled half-heartedly at her breakfast, she thought about the big math test she’d be taking later that day. She had studied hard, but she still felt nervous about it. Tests always made her nervous.

“Not hungry this morning, honey?” Mom asked when she noticed Melody’s nearly full cereal bowl.

“I keep thinking about that awful math test,” Melody said with a sigh.

“But you seemed to know how to solve all the problems when you were studying last night,” said Mom.

“Yes, but it’s different when you or Dad quiz me on them than it is when I have to do them on a test,” replied Melody.

“If only Mom or Dad could go to school with you, you could just pretend they were quizzing you,” said her brother, Kraig. He grinned at her. “But never fear—I’ll be there! Well, at least I’ll be in the same building as you. That’s just as good as having Mom or Dad there, isn’t it?”

“No, it isn’t,” Melody said. “Sorry!” She grinned when Kraig pretended to feel hurt.

Mom smiled. “Dad and I can’t be there, but don’t forget that you have a heavenly Father who will be with you all through your test. He doesn’t want you to worry. He tells us to give all our worries and anxieties to Him because He cares for us so very much.”

“I know.” Melody sighed. “But I still get nervous. It feels like I have butterflies in my stomach.”

“Tell God how you feel,” Mom suggested. “Ask Him to remind you throughout the day that He’s right there with you. Ask Him to give you His peace so you can think clearly. And remember that He loves you no matter what grade you get on your test. Okay?”

“Okay,” said Melody. She bowed her head and said a silent prayer.

“All right,” Mom said when she was finished. “Now that you’ve given your worries to God, how about eating some of your breakfast?”

“Okay. I think I can eat now,” Melody said. “The butterflies in my stomach seem to have calmed down.” • Deana L. Rogers

How About You?

Do tests, news reports, or illness give you butterflies in your stomach? Do you worry about things that are happening—or that might happen? Remember that your heavenly Father is with you and wants you to give your worries to Him. He cares for you—and for those you love too. Talk to God about the things that concern you. Then trust Him, and let Him give you His peace.

Today’s Key Verse:
