Bible Reading: Psalm 121:1-8

“You’re okay, Puff. I’m right here. Quiet down,” said Josie soothingly. She reached down and patted the lid of the cat carrier that was on the floor of the car. Horrible wails and yowls were coming from inside the carrier. “Why is Puff crying so much, Mom?” Josie asked. “The vet didn’t hurt him.”

“I think he’s probably scared about being in the car and in the carrier all by himself,” said Mom.

“But he’s not by himself—we’re right here,” said Josie. “I’ve been talking to him this whole time.”

“Maybe he can’t hear you over all his yowling,” said Mom.

Josie peered into the cat carrier. “Are you scared, Puff? I know how you feel. I remember how scared I was last summer when I went to camp for the first time.” Josie continued to talk quietly to the kitten. “I cried myself to sleep the first night—I felt so scared and alone. My counselor and the other girls were there, but I didn’t know them yet. But somebody I did know was with me. And I’m right here with you too, Puff.”

Mom glanced over at Josie. “Who else was with you, honey?” she asked.

Josie smiled. “Jesus was! I learned a Bible verse that week where He says, ‘I am with you always.’ I’m sure He wanted to tell me, but I guess I was too upset to listen. When my counselor talked with me the next morning, she reminded me that because I had put my trust in Jesus during the campfire time the day before, He was right there with me. I kept reminding myself of that, and then I had a lot of fun at camp.”

“I remember you told me you became a Christian when you got home,” said Mom as she pulled the car into the driveway and parked. “But I didn’t realize it helped you so much when you were at camp.”

Josie nodded as she took the carrier and followed Mom into the house. “I know Jesus is always watching over me,” she said as she gently lifted the tiny kitten out and gave him a hug. “And Mom, if you trust in Him, He’ll always be with you too.” -Eileen Roe

How About You?

When you get scared, do you remember that Jesus promises to be with you? Or are you too focused on yourself to listen to His voice? When you feel alone or afraid, remember that the Bible says Jesus is always with those who trust in Him. He wants to comfort you and promises to always watch over you. He is with you right now. Turn your thoughts to Him.
