Bible Reading: Matthew 6:25-34

“Pretty!” Elsa pointed at a butterfly swooping through the air. Mila frowned at the two-year-old and looked at their mom. “If you lost your job, how are you going to buy food for us?” she asked.

Mom settled Elsa on her hip. “I’ll get a new job.”

“What if you can’t get a new job?” Mila’s stomach felt funny.

“Pretty!” Elsa pointed to the ground.

Mom looked to the spot where the toddler had pointed and smiled. “That’s a beautiful flower. Do you want to pick it, Elsa?”

“Pick it.” Elsa’s eyes lit up, and she squirmed down to the ground. She pulled on the flower. “Pretty!”

“Ahem,” Mila said. “I asked you a question, Mom.”

Mom gave Mila’s shoulder a squeeze. “I’ll find a new job, Mila-girl.”

“Mommy’s flower.” Elsa held up the daisy she had picked.

Mom smiled. “Thank you,” she said. “Can you find a pretty flower for Mila?”

“Mila’s flower!” Elsa tugged another flower out of the ground, roots and all.

Mila looked to her mom as she took the flower. “How do you know you’ll be able to find a new job?”

“Sweetheart, God will look out for us,” Mom said. “The same God who made that beautiful butterfly and these beautiful flowers will make sure we have everything we need. Jesus promises to take care of us, and He’s provided other believers through our church who can help us with our needs too. You don’t need to worry.”

Mila tried not to worry, but a week later her mom still didn’t have any word on a new job. Then another week went by. Just when Mila was starting to notice her mom getting nervous too, things changed, and her mom found a new job.

Mila grabbed her Bible and pulled out the flower her sister had given her. She had put it between the pages to press it and save it.

She looked at the flower and then at the verse that brought her comfort when she was scared. “God clothed the flowers,” she whispered. “He feeds the birds.” She ran her finger over the pressed flower, being careful not to break it. “He will clothe and feed us.” • Emily Acker

How About You?

Do you find yourself worrying a lot? Maybe you’re scared your family won’t be able to afford groceries or kids at your school will make fun of your clothes. God knows you need things like food and clothes, and He will provide for you. You are His child, and
He gives us a family of believers who help meet our needs too. Don’t worry—trust
God to take care of you.

Today’s Key Verse:
Matthew 6:31-32 Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or…“What shall we wear?”…For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. (NKJV)
