No Mistakes

Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:16-21

“Look, Mom,” said Kinsley after reading a story to her little brothers one day. “This book says ponies are baby horses. I thought baby horses were called foals.”

“You’re right. People often refer to baby horses as ponies, but that’s actually not correct. Even when they’re fully grown, ponies are smaller than regular horses.”

“So the author of this book made a mistake,” said Kinsley.

“I guess so,” replied Mom. “And you caught it. Good for you!” She smiled at Kinsley. “I’m glad you’re thinking about what you read and not assuming that whatever is in print is correct. Just because something is in a book doesn’t mean it’s true. People make mistakes—in books as well as in other things.”

Mom held up a piece of paper. “I printed a recipe I found online that I want to try. Want to help me make cookies?”

Kinsley agreed and eagerly helped get all the ingredients together. She and Mom followed the directions carefully. “They look so yummy,” Kinsley said as she took the first sheet of cookies from the oven.

Mom and Kinsley each took one of the freshly baked cookies, but when they bit into them, they both frowned. “I don’t think these taste quite right,” Kinsley murmured. “Do you?”

“No. I think there’s too much salt in them,” Mom said. “I thought it seemed like a lot when I measured it out, but I assumed the recipe must be right.” She grinned. “Our conversation just a little while ago should have made me more cautious.”

“So things on the internet can be wrong too, just like things written in books,” observed Kinsley.

“They sure can!” said Mom. “People are imperfect, so anything written by a person could be wrong. There’s only one book you never have to question.”

“I know what that is!” Kinsley said. “The Bible.”

Mom nodded. “The people who wrote it were directed by the Holy Spirit, so

every word comes from God. It tells us about the one person who is perfect—Jesus, who is God and who became human to save us. The Bible is His story, and it has

no mistakes.”

Do you believe everything you read? Remember, people aren’t perfect, and they can make mistakes. Just because something has been published in a book or posted online does not mean it’s true. But there is one book you can trust fully—the Bible. It’s the Word of God, and it’s never wrong. It tells us the truth of Jesus, and it helps us know if anything else we’re told is right or wrong.
