Bible Reading: Matthew 5:14-16

“My name means “moon,” and the moon gives light, thought Kamaria after her class at church had looked up the meanings of their names. I should give light too. Mrs. Wallace says one way we can spread light is by being helpful and kind, so I’m going to do that this week.

She had very good intentions, but when her little brother, Kojo, wanted her to read a story to him that afternoon, she informed him that she had more important things to do.

On Monday evening, Kamaria meant to take care of the dishes while her mother gave Kojo a bath, but there was a show on TV she wanted to watch. I’ll just watch the beginning, she decided. Before she knew it, Mom came and told her it was time for bed, and the sink was still full.

On Tuesday, when a girl at the bus stop dropped the stack of books she was carrying, Kamaria hurried past her and got on the bus.

At church on Wednesday night, Kamaria saw her Sunday school teacher. “Hi, Miss Moon,” Mrs. Wallace greeted her. “How are you doing?”

Kamaria sighed. “I meant to do so many good things, but I haven’t done well at all. Mom and Dad should have named me something else.”

“Are you remembering the moon has no light of its own?” asked Mrs. Wallace. “It reflects the sun. You have no light of your own either. You can be a light only by reflecting the Son of God—Jesus. To do that, you need to belong to Him. Have you put your trust in Jesus?” Kamaria nodded. “Then trust Him to fill your heart with His love and to help you find ways to reflect that love by caring for others,” said Mrs. Wallace.

As Kamaria hurried past Mrs. Grey’s house on her way home the next day, she saw the elderly woman struggling with a heavy trash can. Remembering her teacher’s words, Kamaria talked to Mrs. Grey and then dragged the garbage out to the curb for her.

As she walked the rest of the way home, Kamaria hummed a tune. Thank You, Jesus, she prayed. Thank You for helping me reflect Your light. Phyllis M. Robinson

How About You?

Are you reflecting God’s light to others? Or are you trying to shine on your own? Just like the moon, we can only reflect the light of the Son. We can only love others and do good because Jesus, God’s Son, shines His light on us. If you know Jesus, He will work in your life so others can see His love in you. Trust Him to make you a shining reflection of His light in a dark world.

Today’s Key Verse:
Philippians 2:15 Among those people you shine like lights in a dark world. (ERV)

Today’s Key Thought:

Reflect the Son (Jesus)
