Bible Reading: Luke 12:22-31

“Mom!” Bella called from the porch. “Help!” Mom came running to the porch, where Bella was leaning over a tiny green-colored hummingbird as it flopped around, struggling with a string tangled around its spindly legs. The bird’s needle-like bill tore at the strand, but the string wound around tighter and tighter.

“Bella, run and get me a soft rag,” said Mom. “We’ll see if we can help this little fellow.”

Bella found a clean cloth she sometimes used to help her mother dust the furniture. She watched as Mom draped the dust cloth over her hand and gently picked up the colorful little bird. The humming sound grew louder as he flapped his long, narrow wings.

“Hold still, little guy.” Mom’s voice was so quiet Bella could hardly hear her. One twist, two twists. The humming sound quieted, and the stubby body relaxed.

Bella let out a big breath of air when Mom handed her the string and carefully placed the bird on the lawn. The bird rested in the grass for a few seconds, then quickly flew away.

“You did it, Mom!” Bella said, bouncing on her toes. “I bet if that bird could talk, he’d tell us thanks for caring for him.” She grinned. “Hey, that reminds me of a Bible story I learned at church.”

“It does? Which one is that?”

“Jesus told His friends that His Father takes care of the birds, and since He loves us even more than animals, we shouldn’t worry because God will take care of us too.”

“Oh, Bella, I love that story. We helped that tiny hummingbird because we cared for it, and we shouldn’t worry because God loves us and takes care of us. We freed the string from the bird’s legs, but God sent His Son to free us from sin! Even when bad things happen, we can trust Him to be with us and help us through them.” Mom smiled at Bella. “Now, let’s go fill our hummingbird feeder. Our little friend is sure to be hungry after all that excitement!” Barbara Gordon
