Bible Reading: Psalm 119:9-16
“So, Cal, how’s your Bible reading going?” Mr. Dave asked before stuffing half a taco into his mouth.
“Well, I did it every day this week like you said,” Cal said, fighting to fold his taco so it wouldn’t drop all its contents. “But I don’t get why I need to read it so often. I trust in Jesus, and I know He wants me to be nice to people and tell the truth and stuff.”
“That’s good, but there’s so much more to know than that.”
“I guess so,” Cal said, stuffing the taco into his mouth. “But it’s kinda boring.”
“Well, keep it up this week,” Mr. Dave said. “I bet you’ll learn something new. What are your weekend plans?”
“Oh man, I’m so excited,” Cal said. “I’m gonna see my dad for the first time in two weeks. It’s really hard not seeing him for two weeks at a time, but that’s how it worked out after the divorce. He’s picking me up from club today. I can’t wait to see him.” He took a big bite of his taco, and tomato chunks thudded to the paper plate.
“Cal, that’s it!” Mr. Dave swallowed and spread out his messy hands. “That’s why you should have devotions! It’s spending time with Jesus.”
“Oh, like with my dad!” Cal replied. “But I can’t see Jesus. Or hear Him.”
“That’s one thing that makes it different from a human relationship—we can’t see Jesus face-to-face until we see Him in heaven.” Mr. Dave grabbed a napkin and began scrubbing his hands with it. “But He’s everywhere, and we can talk to Him and hear from Him. Do you know how?”
“Oh yeah,” Cal said. “We can talk to Him through prayer. And I guess we listen to Him through the Bible. And I bet the more time I spend with Jesus, the more I’ll get to know Him and want to make time for Him.” He took a bite of his taco just before it dripped.
“Good point, Cal.” Mr. Dave grinned. “Stick with it and build your relationship with Jesus. It’ll be worth it.” – Amy Glendinning
How About You?
Is it hard for you to find time to spend with Jesus? Since we can’t physically see His face or hear His voice, we can’t talk or listen to Him in the same way we do with others. But we can speak to Him anytime in prayer and listen as He guides us and encourages us through His Word. Spending time with Jesus gives us a chance to get to know Him better and love Him even more.
