Bible Reading: Psalm 46:1-3, 10-11; 1 Peter 5:7

“You’re home early,” said Mom when Marlee came in after school. “I thought you were going to stay and try out for your class play today.”

Marlee shook her head. “I changed my mind. The play sounds really fun, but I’m not sure I’d be able to say lines in front of an audience—it makes me nervous thinking about it.”

“I’m sorry, Marlee,” said Mom. “Have you prayed about that problem?”

“Prayed? Not really.” Marlee hesitated. “I don’t know…it just seems like I should be able to solve my problems myself.”

Before Mom could answer, Marlee saw her cat rolling on the floor, tugging at her collar. “I think something’s wrong with Gertrude.” She bent down to see what was wrong, but Gertrude jumped up and scooted away on three legs. “Help me, Mom!” Marlee exclaimed.

Mom joined her. “One of her claws is stuck in a slit on her bell. Come on, Gertrude. Be still so we can help you.”

But Gertrude would not be still. Each time Mom or Marlee came close, she managed to dodge their hands.

“I think we’ll have to wait until she tires out from her own efforts,” said Mom. So they stayed near, watching Gertrude struggle as she tried to free her paw.

“Maybe she’ll let us help now,” Mom said at last. And this time, Gertrude allowed Marlee to pick her up. Marlee held the cat while Mom lifted Gertrude’s paw and carefully freed the claw that had gotten stuck in the bell.

“I’m glad she finally let us help,” said Marlee as she cuddled the tired cat.

“Yes,” said Mom. “You know, I think Gertrude’s a lot like you.”

“Like me?” asked Marlee in surprise. “How?”

“Gertrude tried so hard to solve her problem by herself—like you’ve been doing with the difficult situation you face,” Mom explained. “You need to trust Jesus to help you with it. He didn’t save you from sin and make you His child so you could go through life struggling with your problems on your own. Ask Him what you should do about the play and how to handle it.”

Marlee was thoughtful. “Okay,” she said. “I’ll pray about it.”

“Good,” said Mom. “And if there’s anything I can do, I’m here to help too.”

How About You?

Is there a problem you’re struggling with? Have you brought it to God? People may say you need to solve your problems on your own, but that’s not what God says. The Bible says to bring your problems and concerns to Jesus in prayer. He knows what needs to be done, and He promises to help you. Talk to Him about your problems. Then relax and trust Him to help you.

Today’s Key Verse:
Psalm 46:1 (NKJV) God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
