For the Love of Skipper

Bible Reading: Romans 12:9-11

“It’s not that I don’t love you,” Beth told her parents. “It’s just that all adopted

kids wonder why their birth mothers gave them up.”

“I know, honey,” said Dad. “But I’m afraid we don’t know much about your birth mother other than the medical information we received and that she wanted you placed in a Christian home.”

Just then Julia came in. “Mrs. Swanson said Skipper got loose when we were gone yesterday and dug up her garden again. She’s pretty upset.”

Dad sighed. “First that dog chewed up everything in our house, and now he’s destroying the neighbors’ property too.” He turned to Beth. “I think Skipper has grown too big for our small house and yard.”

“But I love him too much to give him up!” said Beth.

“Love sometimes means sacrifice,” said Dad. “The Bible says to let your love be genuine, and that sometimes means putting the good of others above your own—even with pets. I think Skipper would be happier if he had more room to run—and so would our neighbors. I’m sorry, Beth, but I’m afraid it’s time to find Skipper a new home.”

When they brought Skipper to his new home a few days later, Beth gave him one last hug before unhooking his leash. Her eyes were brimming with tears as Dad filled out some paperwork.

On the way home, she thought of something. “You’re right, Dad. Love does mean sacrifice. I thought I loved Skipper too much to give him up, but actually, I love him too much to keep him. As you were filling out that form, I realized my birth mother must have filled out something like that for me because she loved me and wanted the best for me.”

Dad nodded. “She wanted you to have a better life than she was able to give you—just like what you want for Skipper. You know who else wanted us to have a better life? God. That’s why He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins—so we could become His adopted children and have eternal life with Him. He loved us so much He was willing to make that sacrifice.”

Beth smiled. “I’ll remember that whenever I think of Skipper—or my birth mother.” She reached over and gave her father a big hug. – Ruth McQuilkin

How About You?

Has someone sacrificed to give you a better, happier life? That’s what real love does. Parents, brothers, sisters, friends—lots of people often make sacrifices for those they love. Are you willing to sacrifice for those you love? Jesus was. He’s the one who made the supreme sacrifice when He gave His life for you.
