Attic Wedding

Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

“Wow, look at this old dress!” Chloe said as she and some of her friends explored the attic.

Julian held up an old tuxedo. “Look at this coat!”

“And look at these old lace curtains. They’d make a good veil and train for a wedding dress,” said Jane. “I know. Let’s play wedding! I’ll be the bride, and Julian can put on that tuxedo and be the groom. Miles can be the pastor.”

“And I’ll be the bridesmaid,” Chloe said, stepping into the old dress she had found. The boys protested but finally agreed, and the “wedding” was on.

“Raise your right hand,” said Pastor Miles. “Do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the—” He stopped as the others broke into peals of laughter.

“This isn’t a murder trial,” said Julian. “It’s a wedding!”

Just then, Chloe’s mom came up to the attic. She laughed too when she heard how Miles was going to have them swear to tell the truth at their pretend wedding. “The way so many marriages are ending in divorce these days, that might not be a bad idea,” she said.

“My dad says a Christian shouldn’t marry someone who isn’t a Christian,” Jane said as she smoothed out her dress.

“But if you loved somebody who wasn’t a Christian, couldn’t you help lead them to Jesus if you married them?” Julian asked.

“That’s not how Jesus wants us to help others know Him,” Mom said. “The Bible says a Christian shouldn’t marry someone who’s not a Christian.”

“Why?” asked Jane.

Mom pointed to Jane’s dress. “It would be hard to walk down the aisle to your pretend groom if someone were pulling on the train of your dress, wouldn’t it? Well, if you marry someone who’s not a Christian, that person can’t help you walk with Jesus because they don’t know Him. They’re walking a different way, and you’d be pulling against one another instead of walking together. That’s why it’s so important that when you reach dating age, you choose to date Christians. Then, if you ever get married, you can help each other walk with Jesus.”

Does it seem like you’re too young to be thinking about dating and marriage? It’s never too early to make up your mind that when you’re old enough to date, you’ll only date Christians. Choosing someone to marry is a big decision, and it should reflect the most important decision you’ve ever made—to trust and follow Jesus as your Savior. If you ever get married, choose someone who will help you walk with Him.
