Bible Reading: James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 2:21-23

“I feel terrible,” Noah said. “My throat is so scratchy and sore.”

“I know,” said Mom. “There are lots of colds going around, but you’ll feel better in a day or two. Here’s some soup for you. Just stay on the couch and rest.”

Before long, Noah called Mom back to the room. “My head is hot!”

Mom brought a wet cloth for Noah’s forehead, fluffed his pillow, and tucked his fleece blanket around him. “Would you like to watch something on TV?” she asked.

“No,” Noah replied. “I don’t want to do anything.”

“Try to sleep a little then,” Mom said, placing a cool hand on his forehead. “It will help you feel better.”

Noah tossed and turned on the couch for a bit, but finally he fell asleep. When he woke up, Mom brought him some medicine and took his temperature. “Your fever has gone down, and the doctor says you’ll be just fine. You just need to let the cold run its course.”

Noah sighed. “Colds are no fun! But I’m glad you’re here to take care of me, Mom.”

Mom smiled. “Colds are a lesson in patience, aren’t they? And not an easy lesson either. But the Bible says to be patient in affliction, and I guess that includes colds.”

“What’s affliction?” asked Noah.

“It’s when you’re having a hard time. It could be when you’re not feeling well, or something even worse. We all go through trials and afflictions in life, but we can do it with patience when we remember Jesus is with us. He went through the greatest affliction of all when He died on the cross to save us, and one day He’ll bring our suffering to an end. Until then, He promises to help us through hard times.”

“Kind of like how you’re helping me through this cold?” Noah asked.

“Exactly,” said Mom. “Jesus often provides the help and care we need through other people. I’m one way He’s caring for you right now. He’s helping you through me.” She patted Noah’s shoulder. “Are you feeling any better after your nap?”

“A little. I think I can watch TV now.” Noah smiled. “I still don’t feel good, but I’ll try to be patient and remember that both you and Jesus are taking care of me.” -Carolyn E. Yost

How About You?

Are you patient in affliction? It’s not easy when you’re going through something difficult or painful, but remember you’re not going through it alone. Jesus suffered and died so you could be saved and have eternal life with Him, and He promises to always be with you and care for you. Trust Him to help you through difficulties, and be patient as you wait for the day when He’ll bring all our afflictions to an end.

Today’s Key Verse:
