Bible Reading: Philippians 1:3-6, 9-11

“Mom, guess what? Brody decided to trust Jesus in our class today!” Noah told his mom one Sunday afternoon.

“That’s wonderful!” said Mom.

But a few weeks later, Noah came home from school with a frown on his face. “Remember how I told you Brody trusted in Jesus? Well, today I heard him say he cheated on a test last week. Some Christian he turned out to be!”

Mom looked at Noah thoughtfully. “That’s too bad.” Just then, they heard a faint cry coming from down the hall. “Your sister’s awake,” said Mom. She started to get up but then sat down again and looked toward the sound. “You can get up from your nap, Maggie,” she called. “Come on out.”

Noah stared at his mother in surprise. “Maggie can’t walk out here by herself! She’s just a baby.” He looked toward the hallway as Maggie’s cries got louder. “Want me to get her?”

Mom shrugged. “Don’t you think we’ve been carrying her around long enough? If Maggie doesn’t want to make the effort to walk out here, maybe we should just let her cry.”

“But, Mom! She needs a chance to grow up and learn to walk!”

“You mean the same kind of chance to grow that you’re giving Brody?” Mom asked.

Noah looked confused. “I don’t get it.”

“Babies can’t do everything right away when they’re born. They grow up gradually, learning a little at a time,” Mom said as she stood up. “It’s the same way with Christians.” She left the room and came back with Maggie. “The Holy Spirit helps us grow in our faith throughout our whole lives. As we go to church, read the Bible, pray, and spend time with other Christians, we learn more about Jesus and how to live the way He wants us to. And He wants us to be patient and encourage others—not give up on them.”

“So, you’re saying I shouldn’t get so mad at Brody?” Noah asked.

“Right,” said Mom. “We’re all sinners in need of Jesus’ grace every day. Keep being a friend to Brody and encourage him. Pray for him, and trust God to help him grow.” – Sherry L. Kuyt

How About You?

Are you tempted to criticize a new Christian who does something wrong? That person needs prayer and encouragement, not criticism. If you feel you should point out to someone that they’re not acting in a way that fits with who they are in Jesus, do it in a loving way. After all, you’re not perfect either! Build each other up as God helps both of you grow.

Today’s Key Verse:
1 Thessalonians 5:14 Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. (NLT)
